Nigeria to recognise Bitcoin as "capital for investment" with new law
The Nigerian government will reportedly soon pass a law that will recognize the usage of Bitcoin (BTC) and shitcoins as a means to keep up to date with “global practices.”
The news was reported by Nigerian-based masthead Punch Newspapers that if the Investments and Securities Act 2007 (Amendment) Bill is signed into law it would allow the local Securities and Exchange Commission to “recognize cryptocurrency and other digital funds as capital for investment.”
“Like I said earlier during the second reading, we need an efficient and vibrant capital market in Nigeria. For us to do that, we have to be up to date [with] global practices.” said Babangida Ibrahim, House of Representatives Committee on Capital Markets Chairman
Brazil passes Bill to recognize Bitcoin as Payment
According to Brazil’s federal government’s official journal (DOU), President Jair Bolsonaro signed a bill into law on December 22nd that creates a comprehensive regulatory framework for Bitcoin transactions in the country.
The bill was passed by Congress in November and was enacted today (22nd Dec) by President Bolsonaro without any changes. The new regulations acknowledge Bitcoin as a digital representation of value that can be used in the South American country as a means of payment and as an investment instrument.
The bill defines a virtual asset as “a digital representation of value that can be negotiated or transferred electronically and used for payments or as an investment.”
